GST Registration Threshold 2026: Do You Actually Need to Register?

"Do I need to register for GST" has a threshold-based answer, but the exceptions matter as much as the number itself — several situations require registration regardless of turnover.

The general thresholds

  • Services: ₹20 lakh aggregate annual turnover (₹10 lakh in special category states).
  • Goods: ₹40 lakh in most states (many states retain a ₹20 lakh threshold for goods too — this varies by state, so confirm yours specifically).

"Aggregate turnover" means all-India turnover on the same PAN, not just what one branch or one client pays you — a common point of confusion for anyone running multiple small revenue streams under one identity.

When you must register regardless of turnover

  • Any inter-state taxable supply — selling to a customer in a different state can require registration even at ₹0 in prior turnover, with narrow exceptions.
  • Selling through an e-commerce operator that collects tax at source, in most cases.
  • A client specifically needs a GST invoice to claim their own input tax credit — not a legal requirement on your side, but a practical one if it's a deal-breaker for the business relationship.
  • You're liable under reverse charge for certain inward supplies — see reverse charge mechanism explained.

Registering below the threshold, voluntarily

Nothing stops you from registering before you're required to — some freelancers and small businesses do this specifically so they can issue a proper tax invoice and look established to bigger clients. The tradeoff: once registered, GST compliance (returns, invoicing rules, the numbering discipline in Rule 46(b)) applies in full, threshold or not.
