What Happens If You Invoice Without a Valid GSTIN

A GSTIN is 15 characters, checksum-verified, and tied to a specific legal entity's registration status — active, cancelled, or suspended. An invoice can be perfectly formatted and still carry a GSTIN that's wrong, expired, or simply typed incorrectly, and the consequences land differently depending on which side of the invoice you're on.

If it's your own GSTIN that's the problem

If your registration has been cancelled or suspended (commonly for non-filing) and you keep issuing invoices anyway, those invoices carry no valid legal basis for the GST shown on them — your customers cannot claim input tax credit against them, whatever the document says. This is a serious compliance failure, not a paperwork slip.

If it's your customer's GSTIN

  • Typo in an otherwise-valid GSTIN — the invoice can still be technically issued, but a mismatched GSTIN is exactly the kind of discrepancy that surfaces during reconciliation and can hold up your customer's credit claim until corrected.
  • A GSTIN that's been cancelled since you last checked — this happens more than businesses expect, especially with smaller vendors and clients. Charging GST to a now-unregistered entity doesn't make the charge invalid on your side, but it's worth verifying periodically for regular customers.
  • No GSTIN on file at all for a customer claiming to be registered — until you have it, treat them as unregistered on the invoice; you can always issue a credit note and reissue once the correct GSTIN is confirmed. See when to issue a bill of supply versus a tax invoice for the unregistered-customer case specifically.

How to actually avoid this

The GST portal's own "Search Taxpayer" tool verifies any GSTIN's current status in seconds — active, cancelled, or suspended — before you invoice, not after. Store it once on the party's record so it can't be retyped incorrectly on every subsequent invoice; this is exactly why Settle keeps GSTIN on the party record, not the invoice form.
